Regular vs. premium gas: which do you need?
3 min read
Premium costs more per litre. Whether it helps depends entirely on what your engine requires.
Premium gasoline has a higher octane rating, which resists engine knock in high-compression or turbocharged engines.
Follow your owner's manual
If the manual says premium is required, use it. If it says recommended, regular is usually fine with a small drop in performance. If it lists regular, premium offers no benefit.
Mid-grade is a middle ground
Mid-grade sits between the two and is rarely required. Check the manual before paying extra.
